“Annoyance Calls” are called that for a reason: they ANNOY you. No, their PURPOSE isn’t (usually) to unsettle you, but their unwanted sales pitches, scams, and other bothersome purposes have that effect.

The phone was once a way for friends to reach out and speak with you. Emotionally, you may still get a “thrill” from hearing that ring, expecting it to be a friend, a family member, a neighbor, or someone that you haven’t spoken to in some time. Instead, once you pick up, you’re greeted with silence, a sales pitch, or worse: a scam to take your money. This results in a “let down,” which can cause (and may already have caused) you to regret even answering the phone.

One psychotherapist has gone so far as to say that receiving these annoyance calls can trigger feelings of loneliness, emptiness, anxiety, and depression.
